The Future of Financial Regulation

Date: Tuesday 8 September 2009
Time: 12.00 - 1.45pm
Location: Federation Ballroom North, Hyatt Hotel Canberra

Speakers:
Mr John O'Shaughnessy, Deputy CEO, Investment and Financial Services Association (IFSA)

Professor Kevin Davis, Professor of Finance, University of Melbourne and Director, Centre for Financial Studies

Professor Guay Lim, Professorial Research Fellow, Melbourne Institute, The University of Melbourne

About the topic:
The Global Financial Crisis has led to dramatic regulatory interventions in financial sectors around the globe, and identified many areas in which financial regulation has proved to be inadequate and in need of change. The governance and risk management practices within financial institutions, protection of retail consumers of financial services, need for macro-prudential regulation, dealing with systemically important institutions, the boundaries of prudential regulation, and the structure of regulatory agencies are among the important questions being addressed internationally and locally.

In this Forum, Professor Guay Lim will discuss competition and financial stress in the Australian banking sector pre- and post-crisis. How to achieve an appropriate level and style of financial regulation compatible with an efficient dynamic financial sector, and determining the optimal path for the winding-back of crisis-induced regulatory interventions are among the key challenges addressed by Mr John O'Shaughnessy and Professor Kevin Davis.

This forum on Tuesday 8 September was jointly organised with the Melbourne Centre for Financial Studies. The Melbourne Centre for Financial Studies (MCFS) is a not-for-profit partnership between public and private sectors, and between industry and academe. Seed funding has been provided by the Victorian Government as part of its Financial Services Strategy. Members of the consortium are Melbourne, Monash and RMIT Universities, and Finsia. They have joined together to enhance Melbourne’s national and international reputation for excellence in financial practice, research and education. The Centre facilitates knowledge transfer between, and builds research synergies between, industry and academe by undertaking finance research, arranging consulting by academics, and organizing research focused conferences, workshops, public lectures and other educational activities. Since 2006, AAMI has been a corporate sponsor of MCFS.

The economic crisis will affect many individuals and their households, some quite severely. In some instances the crisis will accentuate pressures and accelerate changes that have been underway for many years. However new pressures will also be triggered, and a wider range of people may be effected, especially amongst those who will be touched by the prospect (or worse, the reality) of unemployment for the first time. This forum will examine the likely impacts of a recession on individuals, households and families.
