Cross-National Equivalent File (CNEF)

The Cross-National Equivalent File contains equivalently defined variables for the following panel studies:

  • Panel Study of Income Dynamics
  • German Socio-Economic Panel
  • British Household Panel Study
  • Canadian Survey of Labour and Income Dynamics
  • Household, Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia Survey (HILDA)
  • Swiss Household Panel
  • Korea Labor Income Panel Study

The data are designed to allow cross-national researchers not experienced in panel data analysis to access a simplified version of these panels, while providing experienced panel data users with guidelines for formulating equivalent variables across countries. Most importantly, the equivalent file provides a set of constructed variables (for example pre- and post-government income and international household equivalence weights) that are not directly available on the original surveys.

HILDA-CNEF Codebooks

The 2001–2008 codebooks details the Release 8 CNEF-HILDA file structure and variable name conventions and provides summaries of the variables.

HILDA-CNEF Vol. 1 2001-2008 (covers demographics, employment, equivalence scale inputs)

HILDA-CNEF Vol. 2 2001-2008 (covers financial year income, geography, medical/health, psychological, weights, identifiers, macro-level variables)

Ordering the HILDA-CNEF

You need to complete a paper copy of the Order Form and Deed of Licence for the HILDA-CNEF for Release 8 (which includes data for 2001 to 2008). Please ensure that you read the Deed and understand the terms and conditions of gaining access to the file. The Deed sets out the terms of use of the file and by signing it you are agreeing to abide by those terms.

If you are a student at an Australian University, Institute of Technology or TAFE – including Honours, Masters and PhD students. Please note that both you and your supervisor must apply for access to the dataset independently. You and your supervisor supervisor must be located at the same institution.

Please ensure that all sections that are highlighted are completed with the requested information.

Also, please note that completing the Deed does not automatically give you permission for access to the file. The Deed is not enforceable until signed by both parties, the first being you and the second being the HILDA authorising officer from the Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs (FaHCSIA).

Send the completed Deed of Licence for the HILDA-CNEF to:
