The Social Policy Research contract was originally a five-year contract with the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations to undertake a range of projects investigating labour market and social policy issues. Commenced in 2005, it follows a similar four-year contract with the Department of Family and Community Services which concluded in 2004. The SPRS Contract was extended in 2010 for a further three years. A list of projects undertaken or commenced under these research contracts by year is available. National Centre for Vocational Education Research (NCVER)

Under the new 2011-2013 NVETRE program the Melbourne Institute will undertake seven projects for the National Centre for Vocational Education Research Ltd in the national research priority area, 'The contribution of education and training to social inclusion: To explore the reduction of disadvantage through education and training'.

Under the previous National VET Research and Evaluation Program, the Melbourne Institute conducted research into VET Participation and Labour Market Outcomes for NCVER. The Program commenced in 2008 and nine projects were completed over three years.
