Changes to the Data Made Between Release 10.0 (December 2011) and Release 11.0 (December 2012)

For all changes to the data that were made between Release 10.0 and Release 11.0:

Changes to Wave 10 Files Between Releases 10.0 (December 2011) and 11.0 (December 2012)

Cleaning

  • jhhhqlen, jhhpqlen. Wave 10 HQ and PQ interview lengths. Some interviews are done on paper and when the data is entered into CAPI the recorded timestamps end up being the data entry times. The timestamps had been overwritten with those recorded on the hardcopy prior to release 10, but the interview length had not been corrected. 194 PQs and 94 HQs corrected.
  • HQ R41 Types of other property the household owns had not been backcoded. 'Other' reassigned for 28 households.
  • Originating from a CAPI software change during fieldwork, 3 renting households corrected from rent-buy arrangements to renting-only (R6), and responses in "Home owners and rent-buy only" section (R7 to R40) set to skipped.
  • D8 Job seekers: Main difficulty in getting a job (_jsmreas) [19 cases]; and D13 Have not looked for work in the last 4 weeks: Main reason was not looking for work in the last 4 weeks (_nlmreas) [93 cases];
    These have been corrected when the preceeding "all reasons" multiple response included an "other - specify" which had been coded to the response frame, but the subsequent "main reason" had been left as "other".

Corrections in calculations

  • jhhp1 to jhhp3. CAPI conversion error. On the HQ cover we collect the person numbers of up to 3 persons providing the most information about the household. Due to a programming error these were not being corrected when the household structure was modified. 27 jhhp1, 44 jhhp2 and 5 jhhp3 ids corrected.
  • jhssltl 'Type of second mortgage/home equity loans if no repayment required'. 'Other' reset from 7 to 8. Incorrectly changed during patches to 'Other – specify' codes on several other variables which occurred during the move from PAPI to CAPI. As this was a new question introduced wave 10, it should not have been changed.
  • Same-sex (female) defacto with children (all waves). For these households, by convention, we assign the first listed parent as father and the second as mother (into _hhfxid, _hhmxid, _hhfid, and _hhmid). However there was a problem in this assignment, and the children's parent ids were also being added to the parent's records.

Deleted variables

  • HF-related loops now 16 persons at all waves. Dropped empty variables: jhgxid17 jhgxid18 jhgxid19 jhgxid20 jhgwli17 jhgwli18 jhgwli19 jhgwli20 jhgdli17 jhgdli18 jhgdli19 jhgdli20 jhgsex17 jhgsex18 jhgsex19 jhgsex20 jhgdob17 jhgdob18 jhgdob19 jhgdob20 jhgage17 jhgage18 jhgage19 jhgage20 jhghhm17 jhghhm18 jhghhm19 jhghhm20 jhgylv17 jhgylv18 jhgylv19 jhgylv20 jhgylf17 jhgylf18 jhgylf19 jhgylf20 jhgjlm17 jhgjlm18 jhgjlm19 jhgjlm20 jhgjly17 jhgjly18 jhgjly19 jhgjly20 jhgnlc17 jhgnlc18 jhgnlc19 jhgnlc20 jhges17 jhges18 jhges19 jhges20 jhglth17 jhglth18 jhglth19 jhglth20 jhgri17 jhgri18 jhgri19 jhgri20 jhgrf17 jhgrf18 jhgrf19 jhgrf20 jhgivw17 jhgivw18 jhgivw19 jhgivw20 jhgsi17 jhgsi18 jhgsi19 jhgsi20 jhgsf17 jhgsf18 jhgsf19 jhgsf20 jhgscq17 jhgscq18 jhgscq19 jhgscq20 jhgagf17 jhgagf18 jhgagf19 jhgagf20 jbaja117 jbaja118 jbaja119 jbaja120 jbaja217 jbaja218 jbaja219 jbaja220 jbaja317 jbaja318 jbaja319 jbaja320 jbaja417 jbaja418 jbaja419 jbaja420 jbaja517 jbaja518 jbaja519 jbaja520 jcrj17 jcrj18 jcrj19 jcrj20

Documentation corrections

  • Marked up questionnaires and codebooks updated to reflect above changes

Changes to Wave 9 Files Between Releases 9.0 (December 2010) and 10.0 (December 2011)

Cleaning

  • CAPI script error led to C34 not being asked when C33 was don't know. These 30 cases set to no answer (-4) on C34.
  • Implausible changes in marital status. Although identified, around 50 cases had not been cleaned when an implausible sequence of responses to current marital status were recorded (eg from married, divorced or widowed in a previous wave to never married in wave 9). Four cases could not be resolved from the available information and have been left unedited (these cases were also implausible in releases 8.0 and earlier)

Corrections in calculations

  • C34 (ijbmemsz) Enterprise size. The categories 8 ' Don't know but fewer than 100' & 9 'Don't know but 100 or more' were set to -3 'Don't know' [CAPI conversion error] Now correct.
  • C18 (ijbmagh) Are hours worked at home result of formal arrangement with employer. All the 7 'Not applicable self-employed' were changed to -2 'not applicable'. [CAPI conversion error]. Now correct.
  • G1 Numbers and locations of own children. Corrected for 7 cases where all children were deceased, the locations were unknown for all children, or there was no answer to the location question. This does not affect the non-resident children and resident children characteristics tables (at G3 and G15).
  • ihifboni and ihifbonf (household level stimulus payments and flags) were incorrect if there were adults in the household with a person number (ihhpno) > '09' (the household sum and flag check ignored persons 10 to 14). Corrected for 5 households.

Renamed variables

  • Personal credit and store cards. The screening question for card ownership is different in the waves the wealth module is asked (in non-wealth module waves the question has the restriction "used regularly - at least once a month" and the response rate is slightly different). In non-wealth waves (waves 1,3,4,5,7,8 and 9) the variable has been renamed from _CRHAVE to _CRHAVEM and "used at least once a month" add to the variable label.
  • Waves 5 to 9 NPQ variables renamed: _annzcit -> _annzcin; _anaf99 -> _anaf99n; _anref -; _anfrefn; _anpapp -> _anpappn; _anmigc -> _anmigcn; _anafpay -> _ananfpan.

Documentation corrections

  • Variable order in wave 9 data files corrected [misordered after CAPI conversion]

Changes to Wave 8 Files Between Releases 9.0 (December 2010) and 10.0 (December 2011)

Cleaning

  • Age of youngest resident own (hrcyng) child. These are taken from the G3 and G15 children's grids. However households containing foster, step and grand children were not hand examined at wave 8. Corrections involved setting 42 persons to -2 (Not applicable) as all the resident children were foster, step or grand; and resetting the age of youngest child for 10 respondents. This may also change age of youngest own child (htcyng) as it is the youngest of the resident and non-resident own child variables.

Corrections in calculations

  • hfiriska SCQ:C6b Financial risk assumed. Now set to -1 (not asked) if response to preceeding question ranges from 1 to 4 (should have skipped assumed question as gave description of actual behaviour in C6a).

Deleted variables

  • Unused variables _cpid5 and _cpid6.
