Dimensions of Poverty, Disadvantage and Low Capabilities

This project was initiated to mark the 40 th Anniversary of the Melbourne Institute, and is also being conducted as part of a larger research program titled, The Dynamics of Economic and Social Change: An Analysis of the Household, Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia Survey. It also received additional funding from the Victorian Department of Treasury and Finance.

Its main aim is to develop a multi-dimensional framework for measuring relative deprivation using a capabilities approach (as suggested in the work of Amartya Sen), and then use that framework with data from HILDA Survey to identify and quantify the existence and persistence of multiple disadvantage.
