Biography
Russell Thomson commenced as a Research Fellow at the Melbourne Institute of Applied Economic and Social Research in 2009, receiving his PhD from the Australian National University in the same year. His thesis considers the determinants of investment in industrial research and development (R&D), with a particular focus on the role of tax policy.
Russell has been published in leading Australian and international academic journals on the economics of innovation and the issue of the effectiveness of R&D subsidies and tax concessions. In addition to his academic work, Russell has completed a range of applied policy oriented research on industrial economics issues including innovation and climate change, for clients including the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and the Victorian Department of Treasury and Finance.
Between 2002 and 2008 Russell was employed by the Commonwealth Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government. Russell also has a BSc (genetics and mathematics) and a graduate certificate in international development, both from the University of Melbourne.
Research interest
His current research interests include the economics of intellectual property, R&D and innovation policy, intellectual property and plant breeding industries, the globalization of innovative activities and applied industrial economics in general.
