Biography
Univ.-Prof. Dr. John P. Haisken-DeNew is Deputy Director of the Melbourne Institute of Applied Economic and Social Research. He is currently on extended leave from his position as Professor of Economics and holder of the Chair “Economic Policy: Competition Theory and Policy” at the Ruhr University Bochum, Germany, which he has held since March 2009. He is Adjunct Professor of the Department of Economics at McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada since July 2008. His research interest focuses on education, health, competition policy, applied labour economics, applied microeconometrics, wage structure, migration, welfare and income inequality. He received his doctorate in economics at the University of Munich in 1995, with his dissertation on “Migration and Inter-Industry Wage Structure in Germany” receiving a grade of “very good”. He received his MA in Economics at the University of Toronto, Canada in 1988 and his BA Honours in Economics at Carelton University, Ottawa, Canada.
He has published in many top ranking journals including American Economic Review, Review of Economics and Statistics, Journal of Human Resources, Journal of Economic Behavior & Organization, Scandinavian Journal of Economics, Economic Journal, Journal of Comparative Economics, Journal of Health Economics, Journal of Population Economics, Applied Economics, Labour Economics. He was Co-Principal Investigator in the Special Research Unit SFB 475-B9 funded by the German Science Foundation “Counterfactual Analyses of Distributions of Labour Market Relevant Outcome Variables with a Special Focus on Individual Income”. Handelsblatt.com ranked him 13th in 2007 for “Publications in Top 5 Journals since 1997” for all German/Swiss/Austrian Universities and Research Organisations. He is the author of the panel data package for Stata called “PanelWhiz”.
