Dr Alfons PalangkarayaSenior Research Fellow Melbourne Institute of Applied Economic and Social Research Tel. +61 3 8344 2119 Alfons joined the institute in November 2003 as a Research Fellow for the Applied Microeconomics Research Programs. He graduated from the University of Missouri and obtained his doctoral degree in economics from Oregon State University. In his doctoral dissertation, he studied the theoretical effects of firm competition in advertising on prices under a vertical product differentiation setting, the empirical effects of firm location on knowledge spillovers, and the empirical relationship between comparative advantage and the inflows of foreign direct investment. Currently, his research focuses on micro-econometric studies of productivity and knowledge spillovers using establishment-level Australian manufacturing data. He is also a research associate for the Intellectual Property Research Institute of Australia (IPRIA) for which he was the editor and co-editor of two past IPRIA publications: R&D; and Intellectual Property Scoreboard 2004 and Australian Patent Applications Scoreboard 2004. Free softwareAxel - Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) with BootstrappingI developed this software when I was working on my PhD degree. In its help file, this is how I describe it: Axel™ is an easy to use software to estimate efficiency scores using Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA). It is designed to provide the power and functionality of existing DEA software with added benefits of automatic bootstrapping and bootstrap statistics of the computed scores. This 32-bit software is based on dynamic memory allocation so that it can process data of size up to the limits of virtual memory. The computation engine which is based on double precision numerical procedures ensures numerical accuracy. Axel™ will work with MS Windows™ 9x, Windows NT, Windows 2000, and Windows XP and has been implemented according to the Microsoft Windows Guidelines for Accessible Software Design. In particular, great attention has been paid to making it easy for both beginners and experienced users. In-context help is available for all essential commands, and in-context menus pop-up with the right mouse button. In addition, the use of the standard Multiple Document Interface (MDI) allows many data files to be accessed and used for estimation simultaneously. For the benefits of users, Axel™ recognizes different data formats such as Excel™ .xls files, and other delimited text files (.csv, .txt, and .prn). In addition, users can print and export data tables directly to .html format. While I am no longer developing the software, it is useable (with some limits since the description above refers to the full completed version 1.0 which I never get to finishing it) and available for download. However, I will not provide any technical support nor any guarantee for its accuracy. Yet, please feel free to email me with your suggestions for improvement or questions about installations. Also, if you find it useful and do use it in your research (academic or commercial), please acknowledge such use by citing the software as follows: Palangkaraya, A. (2003), Axel - Data Envelopment Analysis with Bootstrapping, downloaded from http://www.melbourneinstitute.com/people/alfonsp/home.html. Downloading instructions: 1. Download all these three files:
2. Scan these files for any virus (just in case). 3. Run the installation setup file (Axel0.5 Setup.exe) and install the software to your choice of installation folder. 4. Copy the updated executable file (Axel.exe) into your installation folder, overwriting the old Axel.exe. 5. Copy the help file (Axel.hlp) into your installation folder. 6. Read the help file (double click it) and the Readme.txt in your installation folder.
