Ernst is a Principal Fellow of the Institute, where he has been since January 1986. Prior to joining the Institute he was Reader in Economics in the Department of Economics at the University of Melbourne. He is a leading authority on the measurement and dating of the business cycle, and is the author of several seminal works on the economic history of Australia, for which he received major research scholarships. He has also published widely in journals and edited collections, on topics such as economic development, business cycles, wages and inflation, economic indicator analysis, and forecasting economic activity and stock market prices. He has given seminar papers and conference presentations throughout the world during his career, and he has received research funding from the Reserve Bank of Australia.

Within the Institute, Ernst is involved with the Westpac Business Cycle Research Program. He has developed for Australia the leading, coincident and lagging indexes of economic activity, and the leading index of inflation for Australia; and published the results of these indexes in the monthly Westpac-Melbourne Institute Reports 1 to 114 during 1985 to 1994. In 1996 he developed leading and coincident indexes of economic activity for the six major states. Ernst is currently working on a book on business cycles.

Ernst is a Senior Research Scholar of the Economic Cycle Research Institute (founded by Dr Geoffrey H. Moore), New York. He is cooperating with members of the Institute in his research work.
