The Value and Determinants of Innovation

This project

1. Estimates the effects that differential rates of IP activity has on key indicators of firm's performance using a large cross sectional (unit record) time series model of enterprises.

2. Construct a large cross sectional (unit record) time series model of enterprises to estimate the major factors determining patenting, the registration of trademarks and, to the extent permitted by the data, designs. The motivation for the project is to understand what sort of firms are most likely to seek IP protection. This may relate to the characteristics of the technology, the market, the size of the enterprise or pervious experience with IP. Knowing the main determinants of IP will assist policy makers understand the role IP has in promoting inventions and innovation across the economy.
